Pre-Opening Wheat Market Report for 8/24/2010

The wheat market continues to be in an adjustment mode according to traders who indicate that weather problems in Argentina and Germany provided some support yesterday, while a higher dollar sent buyers to the sidelines overnight. Jordan bought 100,000 tonnes of wheat from Germany according to traders and an Israeli private firm is looking to buy 20,000 tonnes of feed wheat. Lebanon bought 50,000 tonnes of wheat from the US and other origins on a tender that had been previously announced, and this may now leave the tender calendar at its lightest level in the past few weeks. Australia’s weather Bureau is forecasting a 60-65% chance that spring rains will be above average in much of its SW wheat belt. The western wheat belt is Australia’s biggest wheat export region and parts of that region are currently very dry. India is maintaining its ban on wheat exports for now, so improved weather and better crop prospects in Western Australia would be considered very beneficial to wheat importers around the Indian Ocean basin. The weather bureau there also indicated a shift toward wetter conditions in New South Wales in SE Australia. Reports from Argentina indicate that cold and dry conditions there are hampering a later-than-usual planting season there and limiting early crop development. The late increase in plantings is in response to higher world prices, and President Fernandez says that production may be 12 to 13 million tonnes, up from last year’s drought-devastated total of near 7.5 million. An extended period of rains in Germany has hampered harvest progress and has caused concern over the potential for erosion in the quality of the unharvested wheat crop. The USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report showed the US spring wheat harvest at 53% complete compared to 34% last week and 21% last year. The 10 year average for this time of year is 59%. The crop is rated at 82% good/excellent compared to 82% last week and 72% last year. The weekly Winter Wheat Harvest report is 95% complete compared to 91% last week and 96% last year. This week’s export inspections for wheat were 21.47 million bushels, about in line with last week’s total. Inspections need to average 24.2 million bushels each week to reach the USDA’s export forecast for the 2010/11 crop marketing year.
